Lorenzo Diggins Jr.

Born and raised in South Central LA, Lorenzo Diggins Jr. is an artist on a mission to connect with people authentically

What does your morning routine look like?

My normal morning routine starts with prayer/meditation. Then I get my great-grandmother ready for the day. If I'm working from home, I'll make a cup (or 2) of coffee on my moka pot (stovetop espresso) and drink it with a nice breakfast. If I'm working remote, I'll head to one of my rotating coffee shops and I'll work from my computer for a few hours.

Where do you look for inspiration?

I’m inspired by everyday life. When I’m out I do a lot of people watching and I’m always wondering (trying to guess) about someones story. I believe that’s what ultimately inspires me - having the opportunity to connect with people and learn their story.

What work are you most proud of?

I see myself as a vessel to something greater than me. Though I am a visual artist who creates through the mediums of photography, illustration, and book-making - the common thread weaved throughout my work, is a deep value in fostering connection amongst people. I say all of that to say that the work I'm most proud of is how I've used my work to create community and safe spaces for people to be and feel like their authentic selves.

What has been the biggest challenge on your journey?

I believe my biggest challenge on my journey has been not having all of the resources to bring some of my visions to life or not having consistent support in operating the business. I still operate the bulk if not all of my business on my own and if I haven't already, I'm reaching my plateau of what I feel I can continue to do on my own.

Who is someone who has helped you get to where you are now? How were they impactful?

Honestly, I can't really single out one person who has helped me get to where I am because it's been a collective effort. However, there are two people who has been instrumental to my journey: (1) my guy Alonso Tal when he worked for CLAE Footwear. He was the first person who saw the value in what I was creating with my "Simple Things" project and was in a position to give me an opportunity by allowing me to use their storefront/showroom to have my first pop-up experience! (2) My buddy and long time collaborator, Maceo Paisley, has always supported my endeavors - in fact he was the first person to empower me as a photographer. Fast forward after gaining momentum from my first first pop-up, shortly after, Maceo was opening up his Nous Tous Gallery space and he presented me with the opportunity to be the first exhibiting artist! Long story short, I can honestly say, I haven't looked back since both of those definitive opportunities in 2016.
