Garett van der Spek
Can you tell us where you’re from?
I was born and grew up in South Africa but have now lived in the USA for 12 years. I am beginning to feel like I'm from nowhere.
What does your morning routine look like?
Get up. Feed inside cats. Make coffee. Feed the feral outside cats. Drink coffee
Where do you look for inspiration? A place, a person, a book, an action?
I'm a vibe guy. My inner world and the way I see the my outside world are so chaotic that it's easier for me to draw inspiration from the feeling I get from a specific moment in time and then try to recreate that feeling for others. The feeling I get from a sound, a photograph, a scene in a movie, an interaction with someone. I almost always draw from a moment and expand that into a song.
What work are you most proud of?
I'm so proud of the song and the video of my most recent single Big Blue. It was one of those songs you're able to see coming and step aside and let happen. Almost like waking up from a dream and the song is already written and recorded. I was riding my bike to my studio while I thought of that first line and by the time I got to my studio I had the first verse and the chorus and by the end of the day I had the song recorded. The version that I released is the demo.
There are varying degrees of difficulty and so many different challenges while shaping a song but it rarely happens that it's completely effortless. I'm always grateful for those songs. It also happens to be a very personal song about my struggle with depression and it feels so liberating to put that into the world like a weight off my shoulders. Just being able to sing a song about it was a huge step forward in getting the better of it.
When it came to making the video I immediately thought of Dan Monick. I had just seen his show 'Goodbye to Romance' and was struck with how a lot of his photography captures that same desolation and loneliness that I was trying to capture in the song. I've never seen a video quite like this one before and I am so proud to have my song as the soundtrack.
What’s the best advice you’ve gotten from someone?
Stretch and floss.
What has been the biggest challenge on your journey?
I am obsessive about music. I think about music constantly and any moment that I'm not working my day job I'm at my studio working on songs. So living that kind of dual existence can be a challenge. Trying to justify my persistence in pursuing my art while trying to pay bills and have some sort of normality in the rest of my life. Luckily I've been working a job that allows me the kind of existence that I spend more time making music these days.
How do you define success?
The fact that I still uncompromisingly do what I do is a success. I used to think the goalposts were a fixed mark, like achieving a specific milestone. However, it takes achieving a few milestones to realize that doesn't really satisfy and there are always going to be new milestones. The goalposts are always moving which is reassuring to know because that way I hope to always be pushing myself to innovate and work on things that I'm always passionate about.
What’s the last thing you bought with cash?
Beer
